Spring 2020 Stitch Fix Fashion Unboxing And Review

The older I get the more I hate shopping for clothes. Now, I completely understand that this sounds crazy - a fashion blogger who hates shopping? However for me, it’s not because I don’t love getting news clothes, or the process of shopping. It’s actually because being 5ft 10, with a large chest, hips and thighs - it’s pretty difficult to find clothes that fit right. For a bit of background, I have always been tall, which isn’t so much the problem. The problem is that I am quite broad, I’m not “slim” but more “sturdy” if that makes sense. Which, like I said is why I find shopping for clothes a bit troublesome. A bit more on my body type and self-confidence when buying clothes in a “petite” world will be coming in another post soon.

Anyway, everyone close to me knows that this is why I don’t particularly like shopping and that’s when someone recommended Stitch Fix to me. Stitch Fix is basically a fashion subscription box which gets delivered straight to your door. Each box contains five different pieces along with styling cards for each garment to give you some inspiration. You can choose how often you want your box delivered to you - bi-weekly, monthly or quarterly. Since this was my first time trying out this service I decided to go with the quarterly option. To begin, you just pay a styling fee of £10 per box, then whatever you buy from the box this £10 is deducted from the total. If you buy all the items in the box you also get a further 20% discount off the total.

The beauty of Stitch Fix isn’t just the fact that you get clothes delivered to your door - every online retailer does this. The unique part of this experience is the fact that the box is completely tailored to you and your style. When you set up a Stitch Fix account, you put in you height, weight and clothing sizes but more importantly you also take a style questionnaire. This questionnaire determines your likes and dislikes and sends it on to your personal stylish who will put together all the pieces in your box as well as the styling card. My stylist for this box was Emily and this is what she chose for me…

Black over the head top by Warehouse - size 14 - £26.00

Warehouse isn’t a brand I would usually shop with but I’m not exactly sure why because everything in this box from Warehouse was an absolute dream. This black pull over shirt is really flattering and comfortable for warm weekends out or summer days in the office. It’s also extremely versatile - thanks to it’s timeless design, it can easily be dressed up with leather trousers and heels for the evening or jeans and pumps for during the day. I love the neckline with the V neck and mock collar design, I think it’s very chic and would look beautiful with some layered necklaces. The sleeves are slightly cuffed which gives the top a more expensive feel and makes it suitable for smart casual affairs. When wearing this top, I think it would look best on me tucked in to high-waisted bottoms otherwise, if you have a large chest, you can make it look shapeless and bit like a tent - not the look I’m going for. Overall I am pretty impressed with the quality of this top and have decided that I am definitely going to keep it.

Leopard print culottes by Warehouse - size 14 - £36.00

To be honest when I first opened the box and saw these, I thought that I was going to hate them. However these culottes are definitely something that look far better on then they do hanging up or in this case inside a box. Thanks to my wide hips I was worried that these weren’t going to fit well, but I must say that these are in fact the best fitting item in this box. They hug my hips well and fasten around my waist comfortably, leaving no gap at the back of the waist band, a common problem I have with trousers. Again, I think these are a very wearable piece - easy to dress up and simple to dress down. I think these would look great on warmer Spring days with a white vest top and some sandals or in the evening with black heels, strappy top and leather jacket. So these are another winner in this box and something I am going to be keeping.

Burgundy abbie twist front jersey dress by Mauvette - size 14 - £45.00

I don’t usually wear bodycon dresses. I only just started wearing them again in the summer of last year so when I saw one was in my box, I was excited to add another one to my small collection. First of all, the material of this dress is so stretchy, soft and luxurious feeling. It felt so lovely to wear and isn’t restricting at all like some bodycons. It’s quite textured too with a slight bobbley feel. Being 5ft 10 I usually worry about midi dresses looking like above the knee dresses, however this one is the perfect length, finishing right in the middle of my knees and ankles. The twist detail in the middle is perfect for those of us with a curvier figure - this really exaggerates a smaller waist in comparison to larger chests and hips and creates a very flattering silhouette. For casual days I’d style this with a pair of trainers and a denim jacket or for more formal events I’d pair it with some strappy heels and a small clutch. As you’ve probably guessed this is another one for the keep pile!

Daisy print davie midi skirt by Only - size 14 - £28.00

I really love the print and style of this skirt. You can’t really see in the photograph but it has buttons all the way up the middle, stopping just above your knees and then creating a slit the rest of the way down. On paper, I would love everything about this skirt. It’s a nice length, a cute floral pattern and the buttons give it a nice bohemian feel. However trying it on was a slightly different story - it does fit but I am just not so happy with the way it fits. The material of the skirt is not stretchy at all so it was rather hard to get over my hips. Then once it is sitting on my hips the rest of the skirt just hangs down - giving your bottom half not much shape from the front. Because of this, the best way for me to style this would be with a black tight fitting tank or a knotted up band tee. Also, the quality of this piece is nothing like the others, the side fastening doesn’t have the best finish with a few stray threads and loosely attached clip. The waist band doesn’t have any structure either so has the annoying habit of rolling down, creating an unflattering waist line. Overall I think this wouldn’t be something I would have purchased on it’s own. However because I loved everything else in the box I decided to keep it and get the 20% discount rather than sending it back as the other four items together would have cost more than the total with 20% off.

White tilly tie front button slubby top by Mauvette - size 14 - £28.00

This top is definitely not something I would usually pick for myself. It’s very cutesy with it’s puffy sleeves and tie front waist. If I saw it in the shop, I wouldn’t even look at it twice. So it surprised that when I tried it on, although its not my usual style, I actually really liked it. The fit is very flattering and I was happy when I found the buttons could be fastened over my chest. I must admit I could have probably done with the chest being a few centimetres wider, however it fits great everywhere else. The material is also soft and comfortable on the skin, however in certain light it can be a little see through - so it’s best to wear a white bra or white tank top underneath. The style of this top kind of gives me “rockabilly” vibes and I think it would look great paired with some classic blue high waisted jeans and some wedges. Alternatively it would also look great paired with the leopard print culottes. You already know the drill by now - I decided to keep this piece too!

For someone who hates shopping, I actually found Stitch Fix to be a really pleasant and refreshing way to shop for clothes. I especially loved the fact that all of the items aren’t something I would usually pick myself but do still loosely resemble my style. I really enjoyed trying the clothes on in the comfort of my own home and without the harsh lighting and limited space of the dressing rooms on the high street.
